We Review the Latest Episode of The Magicians SN02 EP06 – ‘The Cock Barrens’

The sixth episode of The Magicians is finally upon us and begins with a flashback of other episodes. Quentin (Jason Ralph) is back in Fillory and is performing an awful performance of Cirque Soleil. He wants to bring Alice (Olivia Taylor-Dudley) back, but of course, it doesn’t work. He makes his way to go to Alice’s funeral. He, of course, ends up seeing her as she begs for his help once again. He stops himself from breaking down trying to convince himself she really is gone. He soon finds she etched a code on the wall to unlock a door which turns out to be her father’s study.

Julia (Stella Maeve) and Kady (Jade Tailor) are looking into things and learning about a past event which surprising both, took place in Hoboken, New Jersey. Back in Fillory, Eliot and his wife are troubled by what is going on in Fillory. His wife wants to talk to him about the prisoner, but Penny (Arjun Gupta) soon comes in. Quentin talks to Alice’s father and finds she wants him to build a pyramid for her. A Lorian comes to ask for a treaty with Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margot (Summer Bishil) to unite their kingdoms. His name is humorously Prince Ess which is, of course, confusing to Eliot. Margot refuses his offer of marriage to seal the deal and his court wizard attacks. Penny is trying to collect what he needs for his teacher and is having trouble, and he can’t get the herb he needs because the man he has to ask is awful.  The magic cast by the wizard takes the whole castle to Loria. Margot agrees to talk to the prince and consider the offer when Eliot talks to her.

Julia and Kady are looking around an old locale in Hoboken. They don’t find anything, and Kady soon leaves to get help. Quentin and Alice’s father work to build a pyramid. Quentin has to speak Ancient Egyptian Arabic and is troubled by this. Her father pleads for him to do it even if it is hard and he consents. Julia finds a woman who once sealed Reynard and talks her into helping her. In the bathroom, Quentin is pointed to an old picture and giving it to Alice’s father, he learns of her cat’s death. Her father decides to do it for Alice and ends up falling off the ladder. Margot goes to talk to the Lorian leader and slowly works her way into getting him to drop his guard. They soon come together, and it looks like Margot has won. Eliot and his wife Fen have a fight about her past, and he really is troubled by this.

Julia talks to the woman who banished Reynard and is lead into the basement. Of course, this woman double crosses her and knocks her out, but not before she places a tracer on the upper wall. Margot has a nightmare, and Penny soon arrives to ask where they are. She and the lorian leader smile at each other when they wake up, so it looks like things are looking up. Quentin tells Alice’s father she died a hero, and he begs him to bring him something hard to drink. When he goes to splash water on his face, her mother comes to offer her help.

Julia learns that to seal Reynard, she has to give birth to the baby. This, of course, is definitely not what she wanted to have happened. Kady finds help and tries to call Julia but realises she is in trouble. Kady comes to help Julia who is finding of her captor. She has a being called a HaxenPaxen that makes them invisible, and Julia decides to take him along. Margot might marry Ess and Eliot isn’t sure anymore of doing something like that. Penny heads back to talk to his healer confidant.  He soon realises that Margot and Eliot have been royally jerked around.

Quentin and Alice’s mother Stephanie work to summon Alice. She makes it about her until Quentin convinces her to speak true. Alice appears and actually talks to Quentin. Quentin is now stuck with Alice as she lives in his Caco Demon’s former tattoo trap. Things are certainly going in a different direction for him now. Reynard comes to attack Julia’s captor Dana, and it looks like she won’t be alive along. Margot dispels the Lorians magic, and she declares war to spite him. Eliot is troubled by this, but nothing is going to stand in Margot’s way.

The Good
  • Margot truly does have power, Quentin's quest for Alice is beautiful, Really good showing of how death of a child affects the parents, Interesting to see that Margot was so offended she is wanting war.
The Bad
  • Reynard roams free
4.5 Superb
