The Mondasian Cybermen Return to Doctor Who
The BBC have revealed that the Mondasian Cybermen are to return to Doctor Who, alongside Michelle Gomez as Missy in the Series 10 two-part finale. You can check out an official image of the Mondasian Cybermen’s return below:
The Mondasian Cybermen last appeared in Dark Water/Death In Heaven in their Nightmare In Silver iteration, but these Cybermen appear to be the original versions from their debut story, 1966’s The Tenth Planet.
From set photos, however, it seems that the Nightmare In Silver Cybermen will be appearing, alongside the Cybus Cybermen:
Even more intriguing is that some set photos reveal that the Tenth Planet Cybermen and the Cybus Cybermen are now able to fly:
Could it be that the Nightmare In Silver Cybermen are interfering with their own history with help from Missy, introducing recent Cyber technology to their past iterations?
Well, we know that Steven Moffat loves his timey wimey storylines, so it’s possible. Missy also has previous form of working with the Cybermen, having tried to gift the Doctor his own Cyber army in Dark Water/Death In Heaven.
Whatever happens, here’s hoping we see a lot more of the Tenth Planet Cybermen than the classic series Daleks in Asylum of the Daleks. Some other past iterations of the Cybermen returning would be nice too. Perhaps the Earthshock Cybermen could make for an excellent return appearance?
The return of the original Cybermen seems to be a response to current Doctor Peter Capaldi’s wish to face them before he leaves the role at Christmas. In 2014, Peter Capaldi told fans at a Q&A panel for Deep Breath: “I’d also like to see – this is really one for geeks – the return of the Mondasian Cybermen. They came from the Planet Mondas and first appeared in The Tenth Planet. They were absolutely terrifying, with cloth faces. That was really creepy.”
