The Last Jedi: 5 Major Plot Details

As of this writing Star Wars: The Last Jedi is just over six months away from hitting theatres. The anticipation is about to get agonizing as the rumor mills and leaks (whether official or unofficial) start really amping up. The recent article in Vanity Fair revealed some new characters and may have helped feed a few of those rumors running around. I’ve looked at a few and here’s what I find most interesting.

1. This is Luke’s story

The Last Jedi

Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker

The Force Awakens was more about Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and this one will be about Luke (Mark Hamill).  The film is supposed to begin almost immediately after Rey (Daisy Ridley) finds Luke on the planet Ahch-To at an ancient Jedi temple. He will begin training Rey, but since his last attempts at training Jedi went a little south (coff, coff, Kylo Ren, coff), he will be departing from the techniques he learned from Yoda. At some point he will make it off the island, but apparently not before a couple of major lightsaber battles with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), first with Rey and then with Luke himself, in which, it is rumored, Ren will reveal Rey’s father (excuse me while I squee).

2. The new characters

Annie Leibovitz’s always gorgeous photos give us a few new characters and some names. Along with these photos are a sprinkling of details that add something to the plot. Laura Dern is stunning in her photo which names her as Vice Admiral Holdo. Benicio Del Toro looks like he’s swashed a few buckles as a mysterious villain that is only called DJ at the moment, although we have been promised an explanation in the movie. There is also Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux and Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma standing alongside Ren. Then there is Veronica Ngo as Paige and Kelly Marie Tran as her sister Rose Tico, who travels with Finn (John Boyega) on an undercover mission to the casino world of Canto Bright.

3. Speaking of Canto Bright…

This is supposed to be the most luxurious place in the entire Star Wars universe. It’s where we will be meeting most of the unusual aliens in the film, and where writer/director Rian Johnson will be injecting some humor. Boyega has been quoted as saying this will be a much darker film (although Force Awakens definitely wasn’t a chuckle-fest), but Johnson doesn’t want to make it too heavy. It would really go against the canon to not have some witticisms to lighten the mood. It looks like Canto Bright will be a Mos Eisley for the ultra-rich in the universe, and that place certainly was interesting.

4. What is up with Snoke?

The Last Jedi

Supreme Leader Snoke as seen in The Force Awakens

Back in April the Sunday Express speculated on Snoke‘s (Andy Serkis) past and his location, since in the scene above, he’s just a hologram. They pointed out that his elaborate apparel, including a huge ring possibly made from kyber crystal, suggested that Snoke was used to the finer things in life and spent his youth as a playboy. They suggest that his mobile base – a Mega Destroyer, which is one of the biggest ships in the Star Wars arsenal – must have some elaborate throne room. Now, I’m just throwing this out there, but there’s an undercover mission to Canto Bright going on. Just saying.

5. Kylo Ren is damaged in so many ways

The Last Jedi

Adam Driver as Kylo Ren

First off, please note that Kylo Ren’s scar has moved. Johnson thought it looked goofy before, and granted, this looks much more dramatic with the damaged eye to go with it. But Driver has been quoted as saying that Ren’s killing his father may have a greater effect on Ren than maybe he originally thought it would. Everybody is having to heal; Boyega has said he begins the film in a bacta suit after his battle with Ren. But how this  internal strife will guide Ren through this film and the next will make his an interesting journey, one that so many film fans are anxious to continue. It’s one I’ve been on since I was ten years old. We take the next step when The Last Jedi hits the screens on December 15th.
