Sony Announces Release Date for Venom Solo Film
It seems Sony is going to release a Venom solo film after all. The project was initially rumoured a few years back but was canned due to the poor performance and fan reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There were solid plans at one time to feature Venom in a standalone Sinister Six film which fell through for the same reasons.
Venom first appeared in Marvel Comics The Amazing Spider-Man #252 (created by Randy Schueller (original costume idea), David Michelinie, Mike Zeck and Todd McFarlane ) as “The Alien Costume” and appeared as Venom for the first time in The Amazing Spider-Man #300. His first solo series was a six-issue miniseries called Venom: Lethal Protector (David Michelinie, Mark Bagley (#1-3), Ron Lim (#4-6)).
The currently untitled Venom film is scheduled for an Oct. 5, 2018 release, which is a lot sooner than expected considering as far as we knew this project was dead. The news comes just shortly after Warner Bros. announced the Aquaman solo film release date would be moved from Oct. 5 to Dec. 21, 2018.
The last time we saw Venom on the big screen was in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 3 with Topher Grace playing Eddie Brock, the host of the alien symbiote known as Venom. This was, unfortunately, a horrible casting choice in my opinion and overall the worst of the original Spider-Man movies from the 2000’s.
We will also apparently not be seeing Spider-Man appear in the solo film. It will be interesting to see how they tell the origin story of venom, which I assume at this point is what Sony (Sony/Marvel Studios?) will want to do.
