At Great Balls of Fire, Samoa Joe will not just face any old opponent. He will be going up against the beast, the conqueror Brock Lesnar.
This is big news for fans because a bout between Brock Lesnar and Samoa Joe has been a dream match for years. In 2002, Lesnar debuted in WWF, now WWE, and built up a quick undefeated streak before becoming one of the fastest rising WWE Champions ever.
Around the same time, Samoa Joe built up a similar undefeated streak in both ROH and TNA. TNA was a viable rival to WWE for so long because of guys like Samoa Joe.
More than having similar pushes, both men had similar styles – Big men who were/are more than big men. Lesnar was a monster – a man who looked like a real life Terminator – who could combine power moves with technical prowess. Samoa Joe was a big man who combined brawling, submission moves with the ability to fly like a cruiserweight.
Between Joe working for other companies and Lesnar’s time in UFC, it looked questionable if the two would ever cross paths. However, in 2015, Joe signed with WWE. He was on the NXT brand at first, having brilliant feuds with Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura. However, this year, Joe debuted on the main brand, Raw – and the two monsters will finally meet.
As exciting as Joe’s meeting with Lesnar is, booking hasn’t been perfect. While Joe was a beast in NXT, his time on Raw has been less-than-perfect. Joe spent a lot of time looking like a lackey to Triple H and The Authority, was MIA for Wrestlemania and lost frequently to guys like Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.
However, things are turning around. He’s been winning more matches. Winning the 5-way match was one thing, but even with Bray Wyatt in the match, Joe still got the win by choking out oft-protected Finn Balor.
The next night on Raw, Joe cut a great promo where he choked out Paul Heyman. He scored a tainted victory against Rollins, but the company is clearly getting behind the guy.
Brock Lesnar practically needs no introduction. However, in the last few months, fans have criticized him for being lazy and a part time champion. While Lesnar’s recent matches feel like a far cry from the classics he had with guys like Undertaker and Kurt Angle, he still definitely has an it factor that makes those matches exciting. Even his match against Goldberg at Wrestlemania was awesome- and that was less than 5 minutes!
True, he’s not there every week, but that helps him build mystique and makes ANY appearance feel like an event.
One thing does remain: Both men are technically heels. His recent actions indicate Samoe Joe is staying on the side of evil. However, Lesnar seems like an easy switch. Despite being a natural heel, fans have often gotten behind Lesnar – such as his 2015 babyface push. Sure, he’s a monster. But sometimes monsters can be fun.
So yeah, Samoa Joe vs. Brock Lesnar should be a good one.
