Overwatch Update Adds ‘Oasis’ Map
The latest update to Blizzard’s insanely popular first-person shooter ‘Overwatch’ has been released, and with it comes a whole new map for players to duke it out on.
The map ‘Oasis’ is now available to play on PC, PS4 and Xbox One and is for the ‘Control’ game mode, wherein players have to take control of an area and defend it from the opposing team. The map looks set to be one of the games most visually impressive offerings, as well as one of its most unique. As the official description by Blizzard reads:
“Oasis is one of the world’s most advanced cities, a shining jewel rising from the Arabian Desert. A monument to human ingenuity and invention, researchers and academics from around the region came together to found a city dedicated to scientific progress without restraints. The city and its inhabitants are governed by the Ministries, a collection of brilliant minds who possess many secrets that have attracted the interest of powerful organisations from around the world.”
What both the description and the video fail to mention is that Oasis has a bit of a traffic problem, namely, that there’s a lot of it, and if it hits you, you die. Not quite the beautiful paradise it’s made out to be then, but this will add an interesting level of complexity when playing the map. It’s all well and good defending an objective, but you’re not going to be too successful if you’re being mowed down by fancy future cars every other minute. It means players will have more than just the opposing team to keep track of, and who doesn’t need that little bit more chaos in their lives.
In any case, ‘Oasis’ is just the first in a potentially long line of DLC coming to Overwatch in 2017. Back in December, Blizzard posted a ‘Year in Review’ video with Game Director Jeff Kaplan, where he teased some of the additions coming to the game in the following months. Aside from the usual balance tweaks to existing characters, Kaplan teased whole new ones! Though he also stressed that these were in the very early stages of planning and most would likely never be implemented into the game. Nevertheless, new characters are coming, and so it seems are new maps. Again he stressed these were only experimental in nature at the moment, but they’re shaping up well. Finally teased were new modes coming to the game, but apart from knowing they exist in some form, we didn’t learn much more on that front. You can check out the entire video below:
All told, it’s shaping up to be another exciting year for Overwatch players, and it will be interesting to see how many more exciting additions Blizzard plans to make to the game. Plus, with the ‘Winter Wonderland’ event now over, Blizzard will no doubt have a whole host of different events to keep players returning to the game.
Joe only started playing Overwatch a few days ago and is already hooked! Turns out it might take him a while to get used to it though. To see how his Overwatch antics fair, check him out @resonantrevs on Twitter.
