Mark Gatiss Returns to Game of Thrones

We are now exactly three months from the season premier of season seven of Games of Thrones. If you are like me, you’re probably contemplating a marathon session before it starts up again, just in case you missed something the first (or second, or third, or whatever, no judging) time through. Yes, the anticipation is mounting and HBO is doing its level best to stoke the fires. They recently released a teaser trailer with the house sigils being decimated and turning into the spiral made of the dead men of the Night’s Watch after the battle at the Fist of the First Men.

A few weeks ago we were treated to an official trailer which we discuss more in depth here. Now we are learning that Mark Gatiss will be returning as the overseer of the Iron Bank of Braavos, Tycho Nestoris. This is probably not good news for Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), but for the rest of us, well, BRING IT ON!

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown

The Lannisters always pay their debts, but Tywin (Charles Dance) tells Cersei that their mines had dried up. Then when Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is explaining the concepts of lending and interest to Bronn (Jerome Flynn), he says that if the Iron Bank is not repaid, they will finance your enemies in order to get their money back. So who exactly will the Iron Bank be backing?

The Iron Bank will have its due

Gatiss (the multi-hyphenate responsible for bring us Sherlock and several Dr. Who episodes) revealed in The Independent that he has filmed four episodes with another two to shoot, so in a season of only seven episodes, a six episode arc could mean Tycho is a pretty major player this season. Perhaps some Braavosi ships were included in Daenerys‘ (Emilia Clarke) massive armada we last saw sailing toward Westeros, or maybe they will be joining them soon? In addition to Gatiss’ return, HBO has slipped a few new characters in to whet our whistle. Jim Broadbent was recently announced as playing Archmaester Marwyn and Tom Hopper as playing Dickon Tarly, so we know Sam (John Bradley) will get a good showing for the season. It’s also been revealed that Ed Sheeran will be joining the show, although his character has not yet been revealed.

Just keep repeating to yourself, three months. We’ll make it through this together.
