Lin-Manuel Miranda Promises to Perform in “Hamilton” For One Last Time
Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer of the music, lyrics and book to the world-wide critical success Hamilton: An American Musical has publicly announced he will be returning to reprise his role as Alexander Hamilton for one night at the Chicago run of the musical.
The reason for Miranda’s return to the leading role of the founding father is to celebrate the release of Oscar Lopez Rivera, the Puerto Rican nationalist whose prison sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama on Thursday. Now 74 years old, Lopez Rivera moved to Chicago as a teenager and was a member of the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña (FALN), an organization that advocated for independence for Puerto Rico. Lopez Rivera was convicted of a conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. government as well as other felonies in 1981 following a series of bombings throughout the late Seventies and early Eighties. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison. Many considered this a harsh sentence, and labelled Lopez Rivera a political prisoner.
When Miranda heard of Lopez Rivera’s early release, he took to Twitter to express his joy. “Sobbing with gratitude here in London. OSCAR LOPEZ RIVERA IS COMING HOME. THANK YOU, @POTUS” he tweeted, followed by “I wish I was with every Puerto Rican in Chicago right now.”
Miranda then tweeted New York City Countril member Melissa Mark-Viverito (who has been in contact with Lopez Rivera) to relay the message: “when you talk to Don Oscar, I’ve got a show for him in Chicago. It’ll be my honor to play Hamilton the night he goes.”
Mark-Viverito replied, “Claro @Lin_Manuel! (Without) a doubt! Told him you would invite him to Hamilton. But no idea you would perform! What a treat! But he deserves it!”
The last time Miranda played the leading role was on Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theatre in July 2016 – this has since been handed over to long time friend and talent, Javier Muñoz. The Chicago run opened at The PrivateBank Theatre with Miguel Cervantes as Alexander Hamilton.
