Harry Potter: The Force Awakens? New Leak Suggests Cursed Child Trilogy

Talking to the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast, journalist Jim Hill revealed yesterday that he believed Warner Bros. Pictures to be working on a new Harry Potter trilogy based on the Cursed Child.

He told the podcast, “I have heard that Warner Bros has actually had conversations with Emma, with Rupert, and, of course, Daniel about Cursed Child, because they want this to be, for lack of a better term, Harry Potter: The Force Awakens. They want this trilogy of movies to have the actors that we know and love from the original films, that we watched grow up, as adults,”

You may be wondering how Jim Hill would know about an unannounced Harry Potter movie project. Well, Jim is said to have contacts with those who work in the film departments at Disney and Universal, who I am sure wouldn’t think twice of leaking details they have heard before Warner Bros. are ready to announce them. Especially if said details could sabotage negotiations with the talent involved.

Jim Hill also added: “And, of course, they’re hiring a bunch of new, younger actors to play their children with the hope that, if we can lean on JK [Rowling], maybe there’ll be The Cursed Adolescent,

However, JK Rowling has firmly denied the rumours, stating there to be ‘no truth’ in the claims and later adding ‘This. Is. Not. True.’.

Personally, I wouldn’t believe JK Rowling’s denial. If the rumours are true, it would make sense that she would deny them not just for contractual reasons (meaning that she wouldn’t be allowed to confirm the trilogy’s existence yet) but also to secure the existence of the theatre version currently playing in London’s West End.

If people were to believe that a series of Cursed Child movies were coming, it could seriously harm the ticket sales; many who would have paid to see the two-part play may suddenly decide to save their money and see the film adaptation instead. It’s probably why there haven’t been cinema simulcasts or a DVD/Blu-ray release of the play yet.

The leak also makes a lot of sense to me, not least because it states that the first film wouldn’t come out until 2026 – meaning that not only would it come out approximately two years after the fifth Fantastic Beasts film, but also that Daniel Radcliffe (born 23 July 1989) would be the right age to play the 19 years later Harry Potter, who’s 37.

The Wizarding World is Warner Bros.’ biggest money-spinner at the moment and their closest competition to Star Wars, so it’s obvious that they would want to exploit the franchise’s fans with three films as opposed to two in order to get as much money out of audiences as possible. This is business we’re talking about – specifically showbusiness.

There’s absolutely no way Cursed Child wouldn’t be any less than a trilogy of movies.

In any case, a Cursed Child movie is still a while off. In the meantime, however, you can catch the first Fantastic Beasts sequel on the 16th November 2018.
