Game of Thrones fans can rejoice – a teaser for Season 7 has finally been released, with an official release date revealed.
After a slightly awkward live-stream in which viewers were encouraged to comment “FIRE” to melt a huge block of ice to reveal further information about the newest season of Game of Thrones (and the delay in the reveal because giant blocks of ice are extremely difficult to melt – aka “technical difficulties”) fans finally got a stunning new teaser, as well as a release date.
The dramatic new teaser features the house sigils, carved of stone, appearing to fight each other, starting with Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke – Terminator Genisys, Dom Hemingway, Animals.) three dragons; in the meantime, voice overs of characters from prior seasons speaking about who plans to win the Iron Throne play, including the devastating line from The Red Wedding, “The Lannisters send their regards”, and the iconic moment from the ending of the last season, in which Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey– Dredd, 300, The Purge) – is crowned the current Queen and defender of the realms after her fiery destruction of the Sept, and her competition – including her only remaining living child, Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman – Before I Go To Sleep, Man Up, Ripper Street).
However, as all the sigils begin to crumble, Daenerys’s voice comes back over; “Lannister, Targaryan, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell – they’re all just spokes on a wheel. This ones on top then this ones on top and so on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground.”
As the final pieces of stone wither away, Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington – Pompeii, How to Train Your Dragon 2,MI-5) voice echos over, to remind us all: “The same thing is coming for all of us. There’s only one war that matters – The Great War. And it is here.” – a chilling line as the scene pulls out to a deathly blue eye; the blue eyes of a White Walker.
And with that, the seventh seasons premiere date is revealed: the 16th of July, 2017. Alongside this reveal, the Game of Thrones team also revealed this gorgeous graphic.
As fans can see, the graphic shows fire being licked by ice; a nod to the book series the show is based on, A Song of Ice and Fire, and it also eludes to the fact Daneryes is on her way to Westeros – where she will also inevitably have to face the White Walkers in the North.
Since the dramatic season finale of Season Six, The Winds of Winter (which conveniently happens to be the title of the next book that is still being written by George R. R. Martin), fans have been extremely excited for the seventh season. The season six finale The Winds of Winter and the penultimate episode Battle of the Bastards scored perfect 10/10 scores on IMDb shortly after airing, and are considered among critics as two of the best pieces of television to ever air.
Now, fans can live in the relief that the next chapter for the TV show is in the near future. Fans of the books, however, will have to keep waiting.
