Game of Thrones Releases New Pics for Epic Season 7

Game of Thrones fans have been waiting impatiently for winter to come back to HBO. We’ve faced a few disappointments along the way, with the announcement that only two seasons are left and that they will be shorter than previous seasons. It seems like the showrunners feel our pain though, because season seven looks like it will be pretty legendary.

The trailer above and some recently released photos combine to whet the fans appetites. We see Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) standing over a giant map of Westeros, planning their next move, but where can you go when you’ve managed to piss off and/or kill any potential ally? Then there’s Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) standing on dry ground after sailing across the Narrow Sea with her massive force containing not just the Dothraki and the Unsullied but ships from the Tyrells, Greyjoys, and Dorne. Arya (Maisie Williams) makes an appearance, camping out in a snowflurried forest, obviously riding north after scratching Walder Frey (David Bradley) off her vengeance list. But is she riding north to Winterfell or north to the Wall? What does she know about Jon (Kit Harington) and Sansa (Sophie Turner)? And finally, we see what appears to be a massive battle with the Dothraki and the dragons racing across a vast open field. My fan self is salivating.

Sansa’s grown up in more ways than one, but is she wise enough to handle Littlefinger?

The photos show Sansa and Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) standing at Winterfell, with him either acting as advisor to the new Lady Stark or still trying to get her to marry him.

Meera takes Bran back to the South

Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) is shown with Meera Reed (Ellie Kendrick) still north of the Wall apparently, although most likely heading south with not just the knowledge of how the White Walkers were created, but knowing the secret of Jon Snow’s parentage.

Lyanna in council, where she should be

Best of all, LYANNA MORMONT (Bella Ramsey)! The kick-ass little Lady of Bear Island quickly (and justifiably) became a fan favorite, so it’s good to know we’ll get more of her next season, although the fact that she’s a fan favorite is a little terrifying. We all know what George R. R. Martin loves to do to fan favorites.

Sam at the Citadel with Gilly

Finally there’s Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) studying at the Citadel, and obviously teaching Gilly (Hannah Murray) how to read (awww!). He left the Wall to study to be a maester to replace Maester Aemon (the late Peter Vaughan) who died. Along the way he stole his father’s Valyrian steel sword Heartsbane. He knows how dragonglass kills the White Walkers and will probably find out about Valyrian steel. If he can find out how to make more blades he could be instrumental in turning the tide of the upcoming war. More photos can be found here.

The new season of Game of Thrones begins in just over a month on July 16th. While we are unfortunately getting a shorter season, the showrunners are making up for that with some significantly longer run times, according to Forbes.com. Episodes one and two will both be clocking in at 59 minutes. Episode three will run 63 minutes, but episodes six and seven will come in at a monumental 71 and 81 minutes. Those are basically feature film-worthy times. The budget has been focused on making this season bigger and better than before, and if this is what we can expect, the wait will have been worth it. It makes you wonder what they are going to do with the even more truncated season eight.
