Gambit Movie Still in the Works Despite Delays

The last time Gambit made it onto the big screen, it was not a smash hit. Nevertheless, the character is enough of a fan favorite that the franchise wants to give him his own standalone film.

However, Remy Labeau, the Cajun mutant/thief, has had his share of obstacles in getting back to the screen. Probably the biggest of these obstacles is the revolving door of directors. Rupert Wyatt was attached to the film first, but he left in 2015 because he and the studio couldn’t see eye to eye on what direction the film would take. Doug Liman signed on after that but left because he didn’t feel a “personal connection” to the film, according to ScreenRant. He left to direct Justice League Dark but has since left that film. Currently, no one has signed on as director, so that’s one thing the producers will have to tackle before it can make any progress.

Gambit also faces a superhero-heavy lineup. Leaving aside Marvel and DC Studios, which have about ten projects coming to screen just in the next couple of years, 20th Century Fox has three superhero movies of its own to throw into the mix: Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and New Mutants. They are also developing an X-Men universe show for TV, The Gifted. X-Men: Apocalypse wasn’t that well received, but the franchise managed to come back with Logan, and if Dark Phoenix and New Mutants hold their own (because you know Deadpool is gonna rock the house) then Gambit may be able to ride the wave.

Gambit is still in the cards for Channing TatumD

What it does have going for it is the confidence of the people still involved. X-Men franchise producer Hutch Parker said on ComicBookMovie that it’s still a possibility. Simon Kinberg will be producing the Gambit film when it does eventually go into production, and he expects it to be the beginning of a new X-Men franchise. He told MoviePilot that Channing Tatum, who is still attached to star as Gambit, is as dedicated to the character as Ryan Reynolds was to Deadpool and Hugh Jackman was to Logan. But Tatum himself throws another wrench into the works with an incredibly busy schedule. He has signed on to Matthew Vaughn‘s sequel Kingsmen: The Golden Circle and Steven Soderbergh‘s Logan Lucky.

With all the different threads that need to come together and the slate of films already scheduled, Gambit hopefully will start coming together by the end of this year, to begin production next year for a 2019 release. New Mutants is scheduled for April 13, 2018, Deadpool 2 for June 1, 2018, and Dark Phoenix for November 2, 2018.
