First Look at Ryan Murphy’s Newest Anthology Feud: Bette and Joan
Ryan Murphy creator behind, Nip/Tuck, and Glee first kicked off his anthology format with American Horror Story, and his second with American Crime: The People v. O.J. Simpson. Now has a new anthology he has been working on, Feud, which has cast two of the most, talented, empowered and downright stunning women, Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange. FX has recently unveiled the first images from Feud: Bette and Joan, based on the Jaffe Cohen and Michael Zam script “Best Actress”.
The idea of Murphy’s new series is to chronical the great feuds from throughout history with the first season, Bette and Joan centring around the rivalry between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis during the production of their 1962 horror film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? The series has a star-studded cast with Jessica Lange playing Crawford and Susan Sarandon playing Davis. Murphy executive produces the series along with Tim Minear, with Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner of Plan B who is also serving as executive producers. The first season will also tackle how Crawford and Davis endured ageism, sexism, and misogyny in the twilight of their careers. The series also stars Alfred Molina, Stanley Tucci, Judy Davis, Jackie Hoffman, Alison Wright, Dominic Burgess, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, and Kiernan Shipka.
In an interview with EW, Sarandon explained how she felt connected to the role, saying. “I never saw myself as being one of the beautiful girls… So I kind of understood and related to that.” Wheres Lange stated that her part was the “polar opposite” for her. During the FX TCA Panel, both actresses and Murphy said the series highlights the struggle that older actresses face as the age in the industry.
”I wasn’t interested in just doing the broad, campy [show],” says Murphy, ”I was interested in the idea of sexism, ageism. misogyny. Turing 40, 45, 50 and feeling like your at the height of your powers and people saying, ‘Well you’re done.'”
