Dwayne Johnson Leads Rampage in 2018

Dwayne Johnson released information on his newest project via his Instagram recently. Rampage is based on the 1986 Bally Midway arcade game that was made available on everything from the Commodore 64 to the Wii. The last sequel, Total Destruction, was released in 2006.

Ralph, Lizzie, and George having a bad day

Gamespot.com quoted Johnson’s post with the all the plot details:

“I head up an anti-poaching unit out of Rwanda,” he said. “My best friend is a rare albino gorilla named, George. Very bad people infect George, an alligator, and a wolf with a serum. All three animals grow at an unprecedented rate. Their size, speed, agility, and violent aggression is off the charts. They go on a deadly rampage and want to destroy the world. George not happy. Me not happy. When animals like you, they lick you. When they don’t like you, they kill you. I will hunt down the bad people who did this to my best friend. And when I find them, I will not lick them.

The original game had three monsters – George, a gorilla, Lizzie, a lizard/dinosaur, and Ralph, a wolf – that are mutated humans who go on, well, a rampage after they’ve been infected and turned into their respective creatures. Up to three players could play at once, destroying cities, military units, humans, what have you. Once you destroy America, you win. So obviously there’s a bit of difference. Director Brad Peyton, who teamed up with Johnson in 2015’s San Andreas, says the film will be surprising, bringing more emotions, scares, and realism.

Ackerman turns villain

The cast and crew are filming now in Atlanta, Georgia. Johnson also revealed that the special effects will be created by WETA, best known for their stunning visuals in the Lord of the Rings series. AVClub.com fills out the cast list, saying Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be playing a government agent, Joe Manganiello will be the head of a special forces group, and Malin Ackerman will be the villain. The script was originally written by Ryan Engle, with rewrites by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Ryan Condal (Colony). New Line Cinema has scheduled the film for release on April 20, 2018.
