Deadpool Writers Confirm Sequel to Start Shooting This Year

The success of last year’s movie Deadpool was a combination of a great director in Tim Miller, the perfect actor in Ryan Reynolds to portray the merc with a mouth and the excellent writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. This was the movie fans and Ryan Reynolds had wanted since the tragedy that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was as close to a comic book adaptation we have seen to date.

Sadly in late 2016 we learned that Tim Miller would not be directing the sequel due to differences with Reynolds. Right away questions and doubt started to fill the air; Miller was an essential part of the movie’s success and why it was so profitable. Reynolds also said shooting wouldn’t begin until the script was to the satisfaction of everyone involved. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have given us some hope and confidence telling Deadline that they believe that filming will still happen later this year.

“Yeah, it’ll be a solo movie. It’ll be populated with a lot of characters, but it is still Deadpool’s movie, this next one. We’re pushing forward very hard. I think by every account we will shoot it this year, and we’re on our multiple draft now. It’s taken different twists and turns, but it’s really coalescing, and we’re very, very excited. We’re a little nervous, because now we feel like we have to live up to the first movie, but at the same time, we have to have faith, and we have an extreme passion still, and as long as we have passion still, and it’s not a mercenary, venal play, which we don’t think this is, I think we’ll be in good shape.”

David Leitch (John Wick) will be replacing Tim Miller as director of the film. The studio is still casting the parts of Domino and Cable.

It will be interesting to see who they cast, especially for Cable. I personally would love to see Stephen Lang or Ron Perlman. I think both can pull off the look of Cable with some bulking up and a haircut but would have to give the edge to Perlman on acting credentials if they were the only two choices.

I’m sure they will surprise me, though. Like when I was surprised when they cast Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. I didn’t see that coming, but it was an excellent choice.

Bring on the Katanas, fourth wall breaking and the Chimichangas.
