Cumberbatch to Star in ‘Rockefeller Suit’ Adaptation
The novel tells the story of Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who traveled to the US when he was seventeen from a small town in Germany. He somehow convinced people to let him live with them while he attended high school and college. He steadily conned his way up the social ladder for 30 years, using a variety of aliases, including Clark Rockefeller. This alias helped him marry a successful businesswoman in California, with whom he had a daughter. After the divorce, he was arrested for kidnapping his daughter, and the lies began falling apart like a house of cards. After the divorce, he was arrested for kidnapping his daughter, and the lies began falling apart like a house of cards. It was then discovered that he was a person of interest in the disappearance of a California couple in 1985. The man’s remains were found cut up and buried in their backyard, near the guesthouse where Gerhartsreiter was living, but the wife has never been found. He was convicted of kidnapping his daughter, assault of a social worker during that kidnapping, and murder, and he is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
The story has been told a few times on television as well as book forms, but the novel by Mark Seal is the most recent and probably the most widely seen. It’s being adapted by David Bar Katz for Fox Searchlight, which has specialized in indie and art-house films since its inception in 1994, producing high-quality, award-winning films. This will be his first dramatic screenplay to go into production. The film was originally slated to be the English-language debut film of Argentinian director Pablo Trapero, but he has since parted ways with the production, so the director’s spot is still to be determined.
Cumberbatch will be all up in your screens in the coming months. Up first will be this little flick called Thor: Ragnarok that you may have heard of. Then there’s The Current War, where he’ll play Thomas Edison. He’ll return to the MCU for Avengers: Infinity War out in 2018, before taking a breather (if you can call it that) for three animated films: another adaptation of Jungle Book, yet another adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the just announced Magik.
