Character Actor Powers Boothe Passes Away at 68

Powers Boothe, another great character actor of our generation passed away on Sunday.

Boothe was 68. Known for many small roles across the 80’s and 90’s. New millennium viewers may remember him most recently for his roles in Deadwood, 24, Nashville, and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

For me, one of his roles has special significance. Boothe played the infamous cult leader Jim Jones in a made for TV movie where he won the Emmy for portraying the leader of the People’s Temple.

History buffs will remember it was Jones who convinced 918 members of his cult to drink poisoned “Flavor-Aid”, killing all of them and giving rise to the saying “…drinking the Kool-Aid” meaning a person is willing to follow blindly along with what other’s tell them.

The incident took place in my home country of Guyana in South America, just a few hundred miles from where I was born.

Boothe was born right here in Texas in a small town called Snyder. His reps say there will be a small, private service performed in his hometown with a possible bigger memorial to be held at a later date.
