Ben Affleck Stepping Down From Directing Solo Batman Film

Ben Affleck has decided to relieve himself of director duties on the upcoming Batman solo film, after discussing with Warner Brothers on how to make the best film possible.

In a Statement, Affleck said “There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Affleck has wrapped up his work on the Justice League film which hits theatres November 18th this year and was preparing for work on the Batman solo film this summer. Affleck will have a slightly lighter workload without having to direct. That being said he did co-write the script with DC Comics head Geoff Johns and will still be playing the role of The Dark Knight as well as fulfilling producer duties. The list of potential directors that Affleck and Warner Brothers are looking at include War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves according to sources (

I respect Affleck’s decision a lot. Focusing on the writing and acting is crucial for a new Batman solo film. He seems to understand how much the character of Batman is admired by comic fans and movies goers alike. There is also a huge amount of pressure for this film to not only do well but differentiate itself from the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. So allowing someone else to direct was a good call by Warner Brothers and Affleck, it will be interesting to see who they pick.

There are so many storylines in the Batman mythos to choose from that would be an excellent movie or basis for a movie. Let’s hope this new phase of DC superhero movies shows a drastic improvement from what has recently been sub-par movies for the most part. With Geoff Johns co-running DC Films, Ben Affleck was heavily involved in Justice League and Batman films, and The Rock signed on to help out the DC Cinematic Universe I’m pretty optimistic for the first time in a while about future DC superhero movies.
