Bates Motel Catch Up and Character Guide For Season 5
With the premiere of Bates Motel’s final season 5 upon us. Let’s take a look at the characters new and old and refresh the little grey cells before the season kicks off Monday.
We have enjoyed the past for seasons of A&E’s Bates Motel as it portrayed how the disturbed teen Norman Bates slowly unravels and becomes the psycho we all knew he would become. The relationship he has with Mother has ultimately led to his unravelling, with the belief she is his “Best Friend.” Season 5 will pick up almost two years after the events of season four with Norman now a grown man. However, his violent blackouts continue to increase as Mother threatens to take over his mind completely.
Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore)
The last time we saw Norman, he had convinced his mother Norma that Alex is a bad guy, and he is much better off at home than in the psychiatric facility. He decided that he and his mother should leave this mortal world, leaking gas into the house, he survives, but Norma isn’t so lucky. Unable to accept that she dead, he digs her up and her home where is wills her back to life; however, it’s only in his mind. Season 5 is where we can expect to see Norman to finally unravel and delve into the dark depths of his mind’s recesses and emerge as Psycho.
Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga)
Norma is a complicated woman and fearlessly protective her son Norman, but she doesn’t accept that there is something wrong with her son. She tries to have a normal life with Alex after they marry to get her very dangerous son the treatment he needs. She never believed her beloved Norman would ever hurt her. Season five will bring a new Norma out now the old Norma is dead. The new Norma is content spending her days caring for Norman, but we know she can be paranoid, critical and hard on her son. Norman tries to be the good son but Norma grows restless, and that can’t be good.
Sheriff Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell)
Alex and Norma’s relationship was complicated from the get go, but then became more complicated once he married Norma so she could be on his insurance to get Norman better treatment. Alex isn’t squeaky clean, he killed the corrupt local town leader and drug dealer and pocketed his money. Norman was ultimately responsible for tearing Norma and the one man that treated her the was she have always been treated. We will see Alex out for blood in season five. He will do everything in his power to bring Norman down.
Dylan, Noma’s illegitimate son to her brother Caleb (Kenny Johnson). Dylan and Norma try to mend their relationship but consistently disagree when it comes to Norman, Dylan know his is not right upstairs and is dangerous, but Norma makes excuses and can’t accept the fact that something is not normal. Dylan and Emma hi tail it out of crazy town for a better life. Season five will bring with it sad news for Dylan and Emma as they will finally learn of Norma’s death. They might also be up for a battle with Norman, will the survive it, though?
Marion Crane (Rihanna)
With Bates Motel diving into the realm of the Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, we get to meet Marion Crane, the troubled young woman who was at the centre of Hitchcock’s classic and was in the infamous shower scene played by Janet Leigh. We still don’t know a lot about Marion Crane’s season five storyline except that she will be played by Rihanna. Season five will big with is some new faces including Sam (Austin Nichols) and Madeleine Loomis (Isabelle McNally) a married couple who probably will check into Bates Motel, but may never check out. In the original Sam Loomis played by (John Gavin) was Marion’s lover and helps Marion’s sister (Vera Miles) solve the mystery at Bates Motel.
I am looking forward to Bates Motel final season, however, it is bittersweet, I know it must end, but I’m not ready for it to end just yet. This series has been outstanding from the get-go and will be fascinating to see where the take the final season.
